As described in Chapter 6, LCHC researchers assembled a diverse group to study the early literacy development of preschool children. The team collected data over 18 months in 24 low-income households (via direct observations, self-reports, and controlled behavior sampling). The data yielded more than 1,400 literacy events and revealed that the literate environment of these children was far from desolate: Literacy events of a great variety of types occurred during all of the observation sessions.
