One more memory of Peg: I gave my first professional presentation at the Chicago Linguistic Society in 1974 while I was a graduate student at Chicago. Like all young grad students, I had worked a lot to prepare and I was nervous. After racing through my presentation, a young woman stood up to ask a question. Her question was very sophisticated and informed, but she put it in a diplomatic, even supportive way that really helped me gain some confidence that I really could make such presentations after all. That was my introduction to Peg. We talked after my session as well, and I never forgot the intelligence and kindness she displayed there, qualities I saw in her many times in subsequent years.
